Our Story
Bread & Butter Cafe was born out of a dream that we thought might never happen. Just a fun idea that we would talk about doing someday but never really taking any steps to move forward with the idea. Good food, coffee, and comfort were at the center of those ideas...but like any dream sometimes you just don't know if it will actually happen.
Patti Sederburg was born and raised in Pendleton, Oregon, home to the famous Pendleton Round Up and surrounded by wheat fields for miles. She grew up in the kitchen with her mom and sister, surrounded by amazing Italian cooking and tradition. Her grandmother, Ida Carniel, was a huge influence on her when it came to keeping traditional cooking and baking alive for the next generation.
Patti started her professional cooking journey in her own kitchen making wedding cakes and catering dinners all while raising four rambunctious kids. She raised her kids on good home cooking, three meals a day and dessert after dinner every night. Later, she worked as head cook, in the school of her children, for almost fifteen years. Sprinkling in some fine dining restaurants as a hostess, good food and hospitality were always apart her.
Samatha (Sam) Russell, the oldest of Patti's children, was raised in good old country fashion, playing in the creek making mud pies rather than actual pies. She graduated high school and immediately went to work in the restaurant industry, starting as a hostess and then continuing as a server. Almost twenty years later and she is still working in restaurants and loves every minute of it.
Sam was more comfortable watching her mom in the kitchen make all the magic happen, while her sisters took the initiative to learn from their mom. The chit chat in the kitchen revolved around cooking, fun restaurant ideas, and good food, while listening to Andrea Bocelli and Frank Sinatra. Upon being married, Sam realized her mistake in neglecting to learn those skills that her sister's so dutifully learned from their mother. With many phone calls home, practice, and failure those cooking and baking skills began to take shape.
Samantha and her husband moved to Townsend, Montana, late winter of 2019 and not long after there opened up a possibility that was too hard to resist. A small cafe on Broadway had a 'For Sale' sign up in the window, the perfect opportunity! After some time, Sam convinced her mother that this could work, and the planning started!
In June of 2020, they closed on the sale of the building, the demo and remodel of the cafe started, and after much hard work and patience, December 5th of 2020 was the first day the doors opened! It has been a whirlwind of five and half years. Owning and operating a restaurant, no matter the size, is no easy feat! With a lot of ups and downs, they have weathered a pandemic, rising costs of products, being short staffed for months on end, and all other manner of things in between. But the love of good food and providing a warm and welcoming place has held Bread & Butter together for the long haul.
"The community of Townsend has absolutely been wonderful, they have welcomed us, stuck with us, and continue to come through the doors every day. We love and appreciate all of you! Truly, it is a blessing to be here, and we hope our little cafe continues to be a blessing to you." - Patti and Sam
